In February 2020, a teaser website appeared, featuring only a countdown timer and a mention of an upcoming announcement for "Tokyo Mew Mew New". Specifics about the new project were scant. The countdown ended on April 2, 2020, announcing that Tokyo Mew Mew would be receiving a new anime adaptation titled Tokyo Mew Mew New. Two hours later, Nakayoshi made the official announcement as well.

Currently, only a few details are known about the project. However, the official website disclosed that Pony Canyon's voice-acting office, Swallow, is holding auditions to find a new voice actress for Ichigo Momomiya. The successful applicant will also be performing as an in-character idol in the upcoming "Tokyo Mew Mew New" idol group named "Smewthie".

On February 2, 2021, the 10th Tokyo Mew Mew New Prologue video was released, announcing Yuuki Tenma as the voice actress for Ichigo during a video call with Saki Nakajima.

The 11th prologue video unveiled the new voice actresses for Minto Aizawa, Retasu Midorikawa, Bu-Ling Huang, and Zakuro Fujiwara and showcased clips of their auditions.

Smewthie made their debut performance during the TOKYO MEW MEW NEW Online Event "1st MEWting" Livestream, where they performed Bitter Sweet Darling and Resolution of Colors. During the same livestream, a teaser image for the anime, as well as the name and logo of the idol group, were revealed. Mia Ikumi also wrote a letter to Smewthie and drew a piece of art for them.

On July 22nd, during the!Smewthie #4 Livestream, the first key visual, featuring all five core members of Tokyo Mew Mew, was unveiled. After the livestream concluded, a short video was uploaded to the official YouTube channel, which included the new character designs and voice clips for each Mew.

On February 22, 2022, it was announced that the anime would premiere in July, and the character designs and voice actors for Masaya Aoyama, Ryo Shirogane, Keiichiro Akasaka, and Masha were unveiled. A short PV was released, featuring the voices of the Mews, the boys, and Masha.


Tokyo Mew Mew New


Tokyo Mew Mew New is a recent anime adaptation of the second Tokyo Mew Mew manga series, created to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the first Nakayoshi issue. Similar to the 2002 adaptation, this is a reboot that revolves around five girls infused with the DNA of endangered animals who become super-powered heroines and use their new abilities to defeat aliens. Directed by Natori Takahiro, the first season of this anime premiered on July 6th, 2022, and concluded on September 20th, 2022, with twelve confirmed episodes.

The show airs weekly on TXN, AT-X, and BS TV Tokyo. The opening themes are "Cat!! Shite SuperGirls" and "Megamorphose,", while the ending themes are "Tokimekis Ichigo Ichie" and "Can-Do Dreamer". These songs are performed by Smewthie, an idol group composed of the main characters' voice actresses (Yki Tenma, Mirai Hinata, Ryko Jni, Rian Toda, and Momoka Ishii).

Sentai Filmworks has licensed the series and is simulcasting it with English subtitles on Hi-Dive, with plans for a home video release. The second season is set to air from April 4th, 2023, to June 20th, 2023. No information has been given about the total episode count or any subsequent seasons.
